How is Frysk Hynder whiskey produced?
Frysk Hynder Single Malt Whisky is aged for at least 5 years in used casks—such as red wine, sherry, port, or cognac casks. Furthermore, this whisky is bottled at cask strength. Currently, this Dutch whisky is aging in port casks. The alcohol content of this traditionally distilled whisky can vary by cask since it is not diluted.
Before the Frysk Hynder whisky is placed in the cask, it contains approximately 65% alcohol. Evaporation occurs in the cask; over 3 years, this amounts to about 10%. The whisky that comes out of the cask therefore still contains about 55% alcohol. Since most whiskies are sold with an alcohol content of 40%, the Frysk Hynder whisky is also diluted to this percentage. The five-year-old Dutch whisky is bottled at cask strength. This is a much less common practice; as a result, the whisky contains more alcohol.
