7 Tips for Buying a Friesian Horse

Buying a Friesian horse is, of course, incredibly exciting. Whether you dream of those graceful manes in the pasture, are looking for a companion to ride with, or are secretly already thinking about shows and competitions, you naturally want to make the right choice. But what should you look out for? Here are 7 tips to help you find your dream horse.

1. Set your goal 🎯

Do you want to ride recreationally, train in dressage, drive, or perhaps breed? A young foal with a lot of potential requires a different type of owner than an experienced riding horse that can be taken straight to lessons. Be honest with yourself and with the seller.

2. Check the paperwork 📜

An undocumented Friesian horse can be beautiful, but if you want to breed or compete in shows later on, pedigree papers are indispensable. Also pay attention to inspection reports and the pedigree. This will tell you more about the health and performance of the family.

3. Look beyond the mane 💇‍♀️

Yes, that long, shiny mane is enchanting. But don't fall for appearances alone. Pay attention to leg position, movement, back use, and especially character. You need to have a connection.

4. Test drive required 🚀

Ride or drive the horse yourself. How does it respond to commands? Does it feel well-behaved and cooperative, or sensitive and spirited? Sometimes the first impression is surprising—in a positive or negative way.

5. Get a clinical examination 🩺

An independent veterinarian can save you a lot of worry (and expense). For example, a Friesian horse may be prone to leg problems. So have an examination done, preferably with X-rays.

6. Listen to your feelings 💖

Sometimes everything looks good on paper, but it doesn't feel right. Or vice versa: that one horse looks at you and you just know it's the one. Trust that feeling, because after all, you're entering into a long-term relationship.

7. Bring someone along 👯‍♀️

An extra pair of eyes often sees things that you miss in the heat of the moment. A trainer, experienced friend, or even your stable mate can help you get an honest impression.

👉 In short: take your time, ask lots of questions, and don't be seduced solely by that beautiful black coat and swishing tail. A Friesian is a fantastic companion, if you are well suited to each other.

✨ Good luck with your search! Who knows, your dream Friesian may soon be neighing happily in the meadow. 🐴💫
