What makes a Friesian stallion a KFPS stud stallion?

Every Frisian stallion is magnificent, but only a handful can truly call themselves KFPS-approved stallions. The Royal Frisian Horse Studbook (KFPS) has strict selection criteria, and that’s a good thing: it ensures the breed remains pure, strong, and impressive. But what exactly sets an ordinary stallion apart from a true KFPS-approved stallion?

1. Strict selection right from the start

Every year, dozens of stallions register for the first viewing in Leeuwarden. Here, the jury assesses their conformation, movement, and breed characteristics. Only the very best proceed to the second viewing, where the bar is set even higher.

2. The exterior must be right

A Friesian stallion must embody the classic image: a powerfully built body, long neck, proud posture, and of course those characteristic, friendly eyes. The build is judged strictly, because only a correct model can later produce strong offspring.

3. Movement, movement, movement

A true KFPS stud horse almost floats across the track. A spacious stride, a collected trot, and powerful use of the hindquarters are essential. It is not just about gracefulness, but also about functionality: movement must be correct and sustainable.

4. Health above all else

All stallions undergo extensive veterinary examinations. X-rays, semen quality, and genetic testing are all part of the process. In this way, the KFPS reduces the risk of hereditary defects and keeps the population strong.

5. Transaction investigation

Even after passing the conformation and health tests, the job is not done. The young stallion must undergo performance testing: an intensive period of training, during which he is assessed under saddle, in harness, and in the carriage. Only those who excel in this test receive the ultimate title.

6. The magic of character

Frisians are known for their reliable, down-to-earth character. A KFPS stud horse must therefore not only be beautiful and healthy, but also willing to work and people-oriented. After all, what use is a dream horse that is unmanageable?

✨ And voilà: the journey from colt to KFPS stud stallion is long, arduous, and selective. Only a few make it to the finish line, but that is precisely what makes them so special. Their approved status is not only a crowning achievement of their own qualities, but also a promise for the future of the Friesian breed.
